Commercial Circular Promoting FDR and Texas VP Garner Campaign Banners During 1932 Campaign.
—
Promotional circular issued by D.C. Humphrys Co. of Philadelphia advertising patriotic campaign banners for the 1932 Democratic ticket of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Vice Presidential nominee John N. Garner of Texas. Designed for use by marching clubs and rally organizers, the circular showcases a full-color example of the firm’s “No. 1 Banner,” featuring portraits of the candidates flanking a spread-winged American eagle.
Illustrated side panels depict torch-bearing supporters and parade floats labeled “The People’s Choice,” while the bottom section lists pricing for banners in three sizes (15x20, 20x30, 30x40 ft). The circular emphasizes the role of Humphrys Co. as a one-stop outfitter for “Marching Club Outfits and Equipments,” merging civic participation with retail marketing.
Issued during Roosevelt’s first presidential campaign—at the height of the Great Depression—the verso of this circular displays additional black-and-white illustrated advertisements for more banners, campaign pennants (“with lettering to suit either Hoover and Curtis or Roosevelt and Garner”), flags, and oil painted portraits “for mass meetings, halls, clubs, etc.”
