An outstanding copy example featuring Kipling’s centerpiece essay


In pristine wrappers, largely unopened and uncut. An exceptional copy of this May, 1900 issue featuring Rudyard Kipling’s prose meditation “From a Winter Note-Book.” Written at the height of his powers, Kipling reflects on empire, nature, and the human condition.

Brandywine School illustrator Howard Pyle contributes the short story “The Angel and the Child.” Also included are Owen Wister’s “The Game and the Nation,” illustrated by Frederic Remington, and Margaret E. Sangster’s poem “In the Hollow.” The issue features installments from William Dean Howells’s serialized novel Father and Mother and I. Zangwill’s The Mantle of Elijah, along with verse by Anna Hempstead Branch. Stephen Crane appears with “Whilomville Stories. X. The Trial, Execution, and Burial of Homer Phelps,” one of his final pieces before his death the following month.
