Translation of Les Tribulations d’un Chinois en Chine (1879), originally published in America as The Tribulations of a Chinaman in China and reissued here, in 1889, as the second illustrated American edition under the title The Adventures of a Chinaman in China. Jules Verne’s novel follows Kin-Fo, a wealthy Chinese man whose boredom leads him to arrange his own death, only to find meaning through perilous travels and misadventure across China.
