Portrait of A. Toussaint, Signed and Inscribed to Mr. & Mrs. Frank Lambert. Photograph by Edward George Mevs & Co., Port-au-Prince, Haiti, 1910.

Haitian studio portrait inscribed and signed in Port-au-Prince, 1910

A crisp early twentieth-century studio portrait of a young man in formal attire, produced by Ed. G. Mevs & Co. in Port-au-Prince. The photograph is expertly composed, depicting the sitter in a half-length pose, poised and immaculately dressed in a light suit, waistcoat, and bow tie. The verso is inscribed: “Best regards to Mr. & Mrs. Frank Lambert / Souvenir d’un ami / 1910 / [signed] A. Toussaint / Port-au-Prince (Haïti).”

As documented by Princeton University’s Firestone Library, Edward George Mevs, a New York–born photographer, maintained close connections between Haiti and the United States, traveling frequently between Port-au-Prince and New York, and contributing cyanotypes to the Illustrated Souvenir Album of Haiti (1895).
