Rare 1854 University of Berlin doctorate diploma for theologian Philipp Schaff
Frederic William IV Doctoral Diploma for Philip Schaff, Berlin, 1854
Issued under the auspices of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia, this ornate Latin diploma, dated May 7, 1854 (“Die VII Maii, MDCCCLIV”), confers upon Philipp Schaff (1819–1893) the honorary degree of Doctor of Sacred Theology (S.S. Theologiae Doctoris) from the University of Berlin. Presumably Schaff’s own copy, the certificate certificate is printed with the name of the university’s rector, the astronomer Johann Franz Encke, and bears a facsimile of the official seal of the theological faculty. It was printed in Berlin by Gustav Schade.
The diploma commemorates Schaff’s recognition by Berlin’s theological faculty during his 1854 European visit, when he represented the German Reformed churches of America at the ecclesiastical diet at Frankfurt am Main and the Swiss pastoral conference at Basel. By that time professor at Mercersburg Seminary in Pennsylvania, Schaff stood as a leading interpreter of American Protestant thought to the German academic world, and the Berlin doctorate affirmed his stature in transatlantic theology.
Schaff, a Swiss-born theologian educated in Germany, emigrated to the United States and profoundly shaped American Protestant thought, teaching first at Mercersburg Seminary in Pennsylvania and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. His major works, including History of the Christian Church, transmitted German historical-critical scholarship into the American academic and ecclesiastical mainstream, influencing generations of ministers, educators, and theologians across Pennsylvania, New York, and the wider Reformed and Presbyterian traditions of nineteenth-century American theology.
