Inscribed copy connecting Axelrod’s Broadway and West End successes…

George Axelrod’s the Seven Year Itch, Inscribed to London Producer Binkie Beaumont

Firs edition, first printing, thus. Presentation copy of Axelrod’s mid-century stage comedy, inscribed on the front endpaper: “For Binkie Beaumont with all best wishes and many thanks George Axelrod.” Hugh “Binkie” Beaumont was the London theatrical producer for the West End adaptation of The Seven Year Itch in 1953 after its sensational Broadway run.

The play premiered at the Fulton Theatre in November 1952, directed by John Gerstad and starring Tom Ewell and Vanessa Brown. Its 1955 film version, directed by Billy Wilder and starring Marilyn Monroe, immortalized the story’s image of Monroe’s dress billowing over a subway grate and confirmed Axelrod’s reputation as a sharp observer of postwar urban life and marriage.

An exceptional association copy linking Axelrod’s Broadway success with its London staging, inscribed to one of Britain’s most influential producers.
