1844 Memorial from the Tennessee General Assembly Requesting Naval Depot at Memphis, with Map.

Tennessee Appeals for Western Naval Defense Infrastructure

This 21-page 1844 petition from the General Assembly of Tennessee urges Congress to establish an armory, naval depot, and dock yard at Memphis. The document highlights strategic concerns over river defense and economic equity for the West, especially in light of the Mississippi River’s importance and the rise of steam-powered naval vessels. Tennessee argues that the region has long been overlooked for federal public works funding and infrastructure development, and positions Memphis as the ideal site due to its high elevation, river access, and industrial potential.

Upon pages 8 and 9 are printed an early wood-engraved map apparently suggesting a proposed 11-mile canal route surveyed between Memphis and Raleigh, Tennessee, along the Mississippi River. With numbered references on the map, the corresponding legend identifies fifteen critical features, including rivers, creeks, towns, and engineering points. Key features charted include: the Mississippi River; Wolf River, Little Hatchie River; Bayou; Lick Creek; Cypress Creek; Hurricane Creek; Stanley’s Ford.
