Important 1932 Roosevelt–Garner campaign broadsides targeting Depression-era voters

FDR Campaign Broadside Collection: Democratic National Committee, 1932

A striking group of ten campaign broadsides issued by the Democratic National Committee during the presidential race of 1932, promoting Franklin D. Roosevelt and John Nance Garner against Herbert Hoover. Printed in bold type on colored paper stock, the broadsides stand out as ephemeral yet forceful appeals to Depression-era voters.

The issues addressed are wide-ranging: Roosevelt’s personal fitness and recovery from polio, his proactive emergency measures as governor of New York, the plight of farmers under Republican tariff policies, labor protections, electric utility regulation, taxation, home loan foreclosures, and women’s interests. Each broadside distills complex economic and political arguments into direct appeals to voters, contrasting Democratic promises with Republican failures.

The material reveals the Democratic strategy of attacking Hoover’s inaction during the Depression while emphasizing Roosevelt’s dynamism, social sympathy, and legislative record. The broadsides make use of sharp catchphrases—“Stop the Whispering Campaign,” “Thre Reasons Why Every Woman should Vote for Roosevelt and Garner,” “The Forgotten Farmer,” “Your Electric Bill,” “The Public Pays,” “Swapping Horses”—and are carefully tailored to discrete constituencies: farmers, wage earners, women, and homeowners. Taken together, they illuminate the rhetorical and visual strategies that helped build Roosevelt’s landslide victory and the foundation for the New Deal.
