Harper’s Weekly Issue Documenting 1904 Political Campaign and Russo-Japanese War

This issue captures a moment of sharp politics and world conflict during Theodore Roosevelt’s campaign for a full presidential term. A bold cartoon, titled “Defiance!,” shows Roosevelt as a gladiator under the American eagle, a striking image of his aggressive nationalism. Inside are photographs of Republican National Committee leaders George B. Cortelyou and Senator Nathan B. Scott, and Democratic leaders Thomas Taggart and August Belmont—clear evidence of how organized party politics had become.

Foreign coverage focuses on the Russo-Japanese War. Charles Johnston’s essay “From Liao-Yang to Mukden” details Russian retreats, illustrated with a photograph of Japanese troops removing Russian submarine mines at Newchwang. American readiness is shown in photographs of the 27,000 troops at the “war game” maneuvers in Manassas, Virginia. The issue also documents progress in New York City with views of the demolition for the new Pennsylvania Railroad Station and the building of the Williamsburg Bridge approaches. Other pictorial features include a massive oil fire in Antwerp, and commentary pieces such as “An English Dreyfus Case” and “Are College Men Becoming ‘Flabby’?”
