Brooklyn Life Magazine with Interior Views of Thomas E. Stillman’s Residence

A richly illustrated issue of Brooklyn Life, the long-running society and culture magazine, notable here for its “Interior Number” devoted to the extravagant Brooklyn home of financier Thomas E. Stillman and others. A scarce photographic survey of Brooklyn’s grand residences during the borough’s Gilded Age. The images preserve elaborate domestic interiors that have otherwise disappeared with the houses themselves.

The issue also maps Brooklyn’s cultural, financial, and social landscape. Poems, theater notices, women’s club reports, and financial commentary appear alongside an extensive array of local advertising. The commercial pages culminate with a vivid full-color rear cover advertisement for Fiat automobiles, signaling the arrival of European luxury goods in the American marketplace. A well-preserved copy.
