Report on the History of the Discovery of Neptune.

First edition of Gould’s early contribution to American astronomical literature, issued as part of the Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge. Gould (1824–1896), later founder of the Astronomical Journal and director of the Argentine National Observatory, here offers an authoritative account of the contentious discovery of Neptune in 1846, reviewing the work of Le Verrier, Adams, and Galle. His study is significant for situating American astronomy within a rapidly developing European scientific context, while also reinforcing the Smithsonian’s role in publishing serious astronomical research. Gould is also credited with popularizing the term “asteroid” within the American scientific community.
