Outdoor Group Tintype with Photographic Props, Possibly Rockland, Maine.
—
Circa 1870s–1880s outdoor tintype showing over thirty women and three men, posed before trees and a wooden structure, possibly a school.
Notable details include: second row, far left, a kneeling woman holding a tintype group portrait of nearly identical size to the present object, suggesting the group may have posed multiple times or that tintypes were produced as keepsakes; center, a woman with hands clasped at her neck also holds a tintype; adjacent to her, a young woman holds a book, a conventional symbol of education or reform. An intriguing image.
