1867 autograph letter signed soliciting a musical instructor for rural youth in Pottstown, Pennsylvania.
“A disposition manifested to learn providing we can get a teacher…”
A community letter seeking to recruit Abel Rambo (1821–1887), a respected educator, to instruct Pottstown’s youth. In part:
“Sir, I embrace this opportunity of informing you that we are very much in want of a teacher in this place to teach the science of vocal music, and there is a disposition manifested to learn to sing among the young folks of this place, and vicinity, and the larger portion of them appear to center upon you as being a very suitable teacher.”
The correspondent, M.S. or M. Saylor, references a discussion with one Abraham Miller and expresses optimism that “we could get a reasonable number of scollars [sic],” noting both material and interest in vocal instruction.
Rambo was a well-known educator in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He took charge of Washington Hall Collegiate Institute in Trappe, and conducted it for many years.
