Signed presentation copy from Knopf (“For Julien and Grace with admiration, gratitude and affection. Alfred ‘75”) with his printed introduction slip loosely laid in. Knopf’s hobby was to take portraits of some of his authors. Among the photographs are portraits of Conrad, Mencken, Gibran, Cather, Mann, Huxley, Gide, W. Stevens, Chandler, Karloff, Camus, Updike, etc.
