Naked Heel. (Presentation copy; MacDowell Colony)

First edition. Signed presentation from Speyer on the front endpaper: “MacDowell Colony August - 1932. To Agnes Emilia Peterson from her sincere friend, Leonora Speyer.” Beneath this, Speyer has written out the first stanza from her poem “Measure Me, Sky!” — “Measure me, sky! / Tell me I reach by a song / Nearer the stars; I have been little so long.” (Peterson’s ownership name appears above Speyer’s inscription.) The MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire, is the oldest artists’ colony in America. Both poet and violinist, Speyer embodied the colony’s spirit of creative exchange. She won the 1927 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.
