All This and Heaven Too. (first edition; inscribed copy; trial dust jacket)
Inscribed first edition with rare trial jacket and family association
First edition, first printing. Near fine in a good dust jacket (lacks the bottom 2″ of the spine) that was eventually issued with the book. However, this copy also includes a near fine trial dust jacket, with entirely different artwork, that was never issued.
As was Macmillan’s custom of the time the front flap of the trial jacket has four different printed prices. When the sales department arrived at the “official” price, the other prices would be clipped off (which is why Macmillan books often have a price on the flap, but still look like they have been “price-clipped”).
Inscribed on the front endpaper: “For Cousin Fanny Fowler with much gratefulness for her generous help in connection with this book – & pleasant remembrances of 4 Kirkland Place. Rachel F. [ield] P. [ederson]”. Beneath Field’s inscription, in another hand: “Rachel Lyman Field Pederson died March 15, 1942, at Beverly Hills California. Her ashes were laid at Stockbridge – May 9, 1942.” Laid in is a postcard from Radcliffe College illustrating a bookplate to be used for books donated to the college library in Field’s name.
A bestseller about a nobleman who falls in love with a governess with disastrous results, Field’s novel drew from the real-life experiences of her great-aunt who married a New Englander, Henry Field, the brother of Cyrus Field. Basis for the elaborately filmed Anatole Litvak costume drama with Bette Davis and Charles Boyer.
The family association is particularly significant in a book, based as it is, on family lore. A very interesting copy, on several levels.
