The Boston Belles Burlesquers. “Scenes in a Sanatorium”... [opening lines of ca. 1908 broadside]

“And the Beauty Chorus…”

An example of early 20th-century American burlesque ephemera: a promotional handbill for the Messenger Theatre’s revue, Scenes in a Sanatorium, starring the Boston Belles. The program features a full comedic cast with characters such as “Doctor Dippy, a Professor in Dope” “Jake Krameyer, a sausage maker,” and “Mille le Tigre,” alongside named actors. It lists musical numbers, a follow-up satire titled Two Married Men, and additional variety acts.

At various points during the evening, musical numbers including “Jungle Town,” “Base Ball,” “Chew My Chewing Gum,” and “Old Time Rag” were also performed.

An upcoming production of Lena Rivers is advertised for Monday, October 12, informing our suggestion that this broadside dates from 1908.
