“First Harper Colophon Edition” described as “complete and unabridged [and] with a new preface by the author.” Association copy; inscribed and signed to the experimental novelist John Hawkes (1925–1998), known for The Cannibal, The Lime Twig, and The Blood Oranges and with a small drawing beneath Algren’s inscription: “For Jack Hawkes. In memory of happy times at dear old Breadloaf. All good wishes till the next reunion. Nelson”. Included with this copy is a single-page issue of Breadloaf’s The Crumb with a manuscript annotation presumably in Algren’s hand.
