Nude Descending a Staircase. (Association Copy, inscribed to Dan Wakefield at Bread Loaf)
“In memory of the shooting of Dan McGrew…”
The poet’s debut collection, an association copy inscribed by Kennedy to fellow writer Dan Wakefield at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference in 1966: “Dan Wakefield In memory of the shooting of Dan McGrew [a reference Robert W. Service’s famous Yukon ballad] Joe Kennedy Bread Loaf 1966.” Kennedy has also clipped out his photograph from the rear jacket flap and written on the flap: “I cut the picture out to apply for a Guggenheim one time. (Didn’t get it.)” A humorous, self-effacing copy linking two voices in postwar American letters.
