Havre Price-Current. Saturday, July 15, 1837. — Carefully corrected and revised [drop-title for circular]
“Scarcely any inquiry for Indigo.—The sales have only consisted of 5 chests Bengal…”
A rare, densely packed, and detailed snapshot of the Havre market at the peak of transatlantic trade.
This commercial circular lists a wide variety of commodities with current prices “Duty Paid” and “In Bond,” including ashes, bark, beeswax, cochineal, South American, British and Russian copper, cocoa, coffee (Havana, Rio, St. Domingo), cotton (New Orleans, Georgia, Pernambuco), elephant’s teeth (ivory), East-India copal, gums, indigo (Bengal, Carolina), whale oil and baleen (American fishery), pimento, quercitron bark, rice (Carolina, Bengal), sarsaparilla, sugars (Martinique, Guadeloupe), teas (Imperial, Gunpowder, Hyson), tortoise-shell, turmeric, mahogany, and logwood.
On the verso, The Review of the Havre Market includes remarks on transactions for key goods like cottons, indigo, ashes, ivory, and rice, with specific figures for stock on hand, imports, and average prices. It also notes exchange rates for London, Amsterdam, Hamburg, New York, Alexandria, and Trieste.
The Foreign Marine List records recent vessel arrivals and departures, naming ships from Liverpool, New York, Charleston, Martinique, and Rotterdam, as well as vessels preparing to sail for New York, New Orleans, Charleston, Savannah, and Boston.
A well-preserved two-page port circular capturing the commodity flows, trade goods, and shipping movements through one of France’s principal Atlantic ports just before the Panic of 1837.
OCLC locates a single record for Havre Price-Current in the broadsides collection at the New-York Historical Society, described as an example dated October 1, 1832.
