Sheet Music for “Love, Your Spell Is Everywhere,” Sung by Gloria Swanson in The Trespasser (1929)

Scarce sheet music from early Hollywood sound era featuring Gloria Swanson

Scarce original 1929 sheet music for the song “Love, Your Spell Is Everywhere,” composed by Edmund Goulding with lyrics by Elsie Janis, and famously performed by Gloria Swanson in The Trespasser, her breakthrough “talkie.” Published in New York by Irving Berlin, Inc., this six-page folio is illustrated with a stylized cover of Swanson, showcasing the transitional aesthetic of late silent cinema into early sound film.

Gloria Swanson’s performance of the song in The Trespasser, a United Artists all-talking production, marked her critically acclaimed return to the screen in the sound era and earned her an Academy Award nomination. The film was both a commercial and artistic success, with the title song becoming a popular standard of its day. Goulding, who directed and scored the film, and Janis, a prominent vaudevillian and early female lyricist, collaborated on this piece. The music is arranged for banjo and ukulele with the latter arranged by May Singhi Breen.
