The “NEW WOMAN” and the “NEW MAN.” Suffragist—Feminist. Ideal Family Life.
“Set on them yourself, old man…”
Satirizing gender inversion, this circa 1910s anti-suffrage broadside caricatures the destabilizing effects of political enfranchisement on traditional family life.
The image features a rooster, labeled “Votes for Women,” walking out of the domestic sphere and abandoning the nest, while the hen, flustered and seated awkwardly over a clutch of eggs, protests that “these eggs will get all cold.”
The caption derides the “Ideal Family Life” of the suffragist-feminist vision, using barnyard humor to underscore fears of domestic disorder and emasculated men. These images were common weapons in anti-suffrage propaganda, projecting societal anxiety about the erosion of patriarchal norms.
