Lovin’ Sam. The Sheik of Alabam’ Fox Trot.
—
Milton Ager and Jack Yellen became well-known for their Great Depression hit song “Happy Days Are Here Again” (they weren’t), and this fox trot number, previously issued during the early twenties.
An unusual artifact of American music publishing, this iteration of Lovin’ Sam. The Sheik of Alabam’ comprises 14 unbound sheets, each 10½ × 14½ inches and folded once, with scored music for 14 individual instruments including piano, violin, trombone, drums, bass, cello, and saxophone.
We’re going to suggest that this is a unique survival. As each musician took their respective piece of sheet music for placement on their own stand, we suggest unbound publications of this type were quickly “scattered to the winds.”
