Early’s defense of Jackson’s 1862 campaign and Confederate memory

First edition. Address by Lieut. General Jubal A. Early (1816-1894) recounting Stonewall Jackson’s August 1862 campaign against Union General John Pope. Early’s speech frames Jackson’s movements as a masterstroke of strategy, reinforcing Lost Cause narratives of Confederate valor. Early’s final comment reads: “I trust that every faithful soldier of the Army of Northern Virginia is ready to exclaim with me: ‘If ever I disown, repudiate, or apologize for, the cause for which Lee fought and Jackson died, let the lightnings of Heaven blast me, and the scorn of all good men and true women be my portion.’”

After page 52 a separate title is seen: The Third Annual Report of the Society of the Army and Navy of the Confederate States in the State of Maryland. Held at the Carrollton Hotel, February 22, 1883. With frontispiece portrait of Maj. General I.R. Trimble.

[Baltimore: Foley Bros., printers, 1883]. 8vo. Portrait frontispiece, [v], 52, [1], [v], 38 pp. Original pictorial wrappers. This is a complete, but fair copy: the wrappers are detached and secured by two old tape mends; the lower right corner of most pages have either areas of small paper loss or evidence of old faint dampstaining—neither causing loss of text or anywhere near type; plain rear wrap with one corner chipped off.
