Circa 1970s Black Panther Party press photograph of Huey P. Newton, taken by Lauryn Williams, the party’s first female photographer.

As the Black Panther Party’s first female photographer, Lauryn Williams led its photography department at Central Headquarters, working from the Ministry of Information. Her images documented the movement’s leadership, activism, and community engagement at a time of intense government suppression (The Black Panther Newspaper: 55th Year Anniversary Commemorative Issue).

Williams’s “official” press photo shows Party founder Huey Newton smiling in a relaxed pose. The same image appears on the cover of Michael Newton’s book Bitter Grain: Huey Newton and the Black Panther Party.
