Honoring civil rights leader Whitney M. Young Jr….

This memorial press packet honors civil rights leader Whitney M. Young Jr., (1921–1971) a social worker and activist who modernized the National Urban League by expanding its chapters and influence while maintaining strategic alliances with political and corporate leaders. Young played a key role in advocating for economic empowerment, proposing a “Domestic Marshall Plan” to combat poverty, and aligning the League with broader civil rights efforts, including the March on Washington.

Issued by the National Urban League, the packet contains 11 items, including a cover letter from a League employee noting there was a “limited number” of these packets, either issued or available or both. The materials include a schedule of events detailing the transport of Young’s body to its final resting place and a list of pallbearers, among them LeRoi Jones (Imamu Amiri Baraka), Lyndon B. Johnson, Vernon Jordan, Henry Ford II, and David Rockefeller. The packet also contains eulogies delivered by Benjamin Mays and Howard Thurman. Other stapled documents include Young’s “Career Highlights,” a biography of his wife, Margaret Young, and Harold R. Sims, and four items representing his speeches and writings: “The Ghetto Investment,” “Black People,” “To Be Equal,” and “Beyond Race.”

Apparently unrecorded in OCLC and not to be conflated with OCLC 1717564.
