Meet Coretta King. Honorary Chairman, National Union of Hospital and Nursing Home Employees.
“Come On Out! Rally! For Freedom!”
A rare and ephemeral program documenting Coretta Scott King’s leadership in a lesser-known chapter of the labor and civil rights movements.
In 1970, as Honorary Chairman of the National Union of Hospital and Nursing Home Employees, King headlined a Pittsburgh rally in support of Local 1199P’s fight for fair wages and better working conditions. Held at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, the event was part of a broader movement linking labor rights to racial justice. Speakers included labor leaders, religious figures, and activists, reinforcing the rally’s urgency.
The rally’s promotional flyer framed the workers’ struggle in stark terms:
“Hospital workers are fighting for human rights and union rights. It’s your fight too. It’s no accident that most hospital workers are black. The hospitals think the miserable wages and bad working conditions their workers get are good enough for blacks. Well, it’s time we changed that state of mind.”
The call for solidarity reflects the era’s intersectional push for economic and racial equality, a cause King reinforced through her activism in both movements.
