Negro History Bulletin Vol. 35 No 7. November, 1972. Slaves and Slavery Issue.

This issue presented a scholarly array of articles examining African American slaves and slavery.

Articles include Bill Belton’s “The Indian Heritage of Crispus Attucks,” Polly Pope’s “A Maroon Settlement on St. Croix” exploring a self-sustained maroon community, and Reuben Garner’s “Responses of Colonial Inspectors to Slavery and the Slave Trade, 1815–1849,” examining colonial views on the Atlantic slave trade. Patrick L. Simpkins contributed “North Carolina Quakers and Blacks: Education and Membership,” analyzing interactions between Quakers and African Americans in North Carolina, while Elizabeth F. Chittenden offered “Black Missionary to White Vermont,” detailing the experience of an African American missionary in predominantly white Vermont.

Also included are poems, such as Octave Lilly, Jr.’s “I Am Crispus Attucks” and Lillie Mae Carter’s “Who,” both capturing themes of identity and resistance in verse. The issue concluded with reviews, including Black Frenchmen: The Political Integration of the French Antilles by Reuben Garner, Captain Blackman by Earl A. Cash, and Slavery Past and Present by Roy Pinney, reviewed by Thelma D. Perry.
