“The Oldest Afro-American Publishing Firm in the United States!”

One of the last catalogs, if not the final catalog, issued by this venerable Washington, D.C., firm, established in 1921 by Carter G. Woodson to publish books on African-American history, including his own. Known as the “Father of Black History,” Woodson began the annual celebration of Negro History Week (now Black History Month) in February 1926.

Here, in 1990, well over fifty titles are listed, many described as “rare first editions.” Also included are “Black History Kits” and 17 sets of pictures featuring portraits of prominent Black Americans and their allies, significant historical scenes in African-American history, and twelve ASNLH documents.

Notably, the catalog reflects the firm’s effort to stay relevant by embracing emerging technology. Among the offerings was a video cassette titled A Conversation with a Living Relative of Harriet Tubman. Potential purchasers could also write in to receive a list of additional video programs available.
