From the book’s editor and Confederate general to a fellow officer…

First edition. Presentation inscription from the editor, former Confederate General, Bradley Tyler Johnson: “Maj[or] Charles McCain from Bradley T. Johnson.”

Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston commanded forces at the First Battle of Bull Run, though victory is often attributed to his subordinate, P.G.T. Beauregard. Johnston led defensive campaigns in Virginia and later commanded the Army of Tennessee against General Sherman in the Atlanta Campaign. Despite significant disagreements with Confederate president Jefferson Davis, Johnston was recognized for his strategic caution. In 1865, he surrendered all remaining Confederate forces in the Carolinas to Sherman, marking one of the largest surrenders of the war.

Nevins: “A highly sympathetic and strongly partisan account by a soldier who served with Johnston throughout the war.”
