The Home of the Blizzard. Being The Story Of The Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914. (Two Volumes)
Mawson’s harrowing Antarctic survival and lasting scientific legacy
First American edition in second binding state. A classic Antarctic exploration account, richly illustrated with 18 color plates, numerous black-and-white images, in-text illustrations, and three color folding maps in Volume II’s rear pocket.
Douglas Mawson led the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–14), establishing bases at Cape Denison and Queen Mary Land. His team explored thousands of miles, gathering invaluable scientific data.
Enduring one of the harshest landscapes on earth, Mawson survived after losing both his companions on an inland sledging expedition. His delayed return forced his team to endure an extra Antarctic winter before rescue. Knighted in 1914, Mawson returned to Australia as a celebrated explorer, his name linked with Scott and Shackleton.
To pay off expedition debts, he lectured and made personal appeals, though this 1915 account, The Home of the Blizzard, brought only modest financial success. (ODNB) This particular example is exceptionally bright and clean.
