A striking full-page wood-engraved portrait of Frederick Douglass highlights this November 24, 1883 issue of Harper’s Weekly, which features an admiring biographical tribute to the statesman and abolitionist by George W. Curtis.
Large folio (17 x 12 inches), the complete issue in 24-pages, as-issued and never bound, or trimmed down, as often found.
In addition to the cover’s portrait of Frederick Douglass, there is a two-column biography by George W. Curtis on page 743. Curtis praised Douglass “as the most conspicuous American of African descent. Born a slave, he is to-day, by his own energy and character and courage, an eminent citizen, and his life has been a constant and powerful plea for his people.”
This issue also includes other interesting graphics: “Autumn Leaves” by Howard Pyle; a portrait of “The Late J. Marion Sims, M.D.”; and a double-page centerfold titled “Evacuation Day One Hundred Years Ago—The Continental Army Marching Down the Old Bowery, New York, Nov. 25, 1783.” Additional illustrations include “The Junior Century, New York” and “Pen Sketches in the Far Northwest” and engravings interpreting Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven.”
