1943 – 1944 United Airlines Calendar: The Main Line Airway ... The Route of the Mainliners.
A Golden Age of Aviation
This large and colorful second World War calendar served both as an advertisement for United Airlines, a statement of patriotism, and a look into America’s future. Beginning with December 1943 and concluding on December 1944, thirteen calendar months are shown, each illustrated. A key on the verso of the last calendar provides context for each month’s illustration, i.e.,
“January, 1944… Mt. San Jacinto - This striking view, combining the warm desert and snow-capped mountain scenery of Southern California, was made shortly after a January sunrise at Seven Palms landmark near Palm Springs, using 5x7 Koda-chrome; 1/10 sec. at f16. It was near the foot of this mountain that Russia’s Lt. Mikhail Gromov, recently cited by Josef Stalin, landed on July 14, 1937 to conclude a 6,262 mile non-stop Moscow-U. S. flight via the North Pole. Time 62 hrs., 2 min.” [Another Example:] “November, 1944… ‘Evening Flight’ - The wonder of mechanical flight resulting from the great work of Orville and Wilbur Wright, and developed to its present day tremendous importance by the inventive genius and tireless experimentation of thousands of their fellowmen, seems to be symbolized by the shining metal plane here seen soaring above heavy swelling cumulus clouds whose top edges are still catching the last faint light of day. 35mm Kodachrome; 1/100 second at f 2.8.”
An inserted ‘letter’ by Max Patterson, UA president, reflects on America’s resilience in wartime and looks ahead to advancements in aviation and national growth post-war.
