The Lord’s Prayer in Arabic [Al-Salah al-Rabbaniyyah].
—
This unrecorded nineteenth-century broadside prints, as it states, The Lord’s Prayer in Arabic, within an ornate typographic border, with the prayer itself presented within a keystone-shaped inset with a thick border, possibly symbolizing prayer as the foundation of one’s faith.
The font is standard, highly legible nineteenth-century Arabc type face, such as used by missionary and Bible printing societies.
The broadside was possibly used by missionaries as a catechetical tool to teach the prayer to Arabic-speaking Christians or for outreach to Arabic speakers unfamiliar with Christianity. The broadside format would have suitable for public display, such as in a classroom or a place of worship. Additionally, The Lord’s Prayer was often used as a set piece to demonstrate typography.
A small printed Arabic slip, affixed upside down to the broadside’s lower margin, roughly translates to: “From Egypt’s Alexandria. [18]66”.
