1886–1887 Catalogue of Allen Academy, a co-ed “English, Classical, French and German Boarding and Day School” conducted by Ira Wilder Allen. Includes a list of instructors and their qualifications, a statement on the aims of the school, a description of both the classical course and the scientific course, and a list of fees and tuition. Notable is a section devoted to study-abroad opportunities in Europe during the summers of 1886 –1889, in Germany, Switzerland, England and Scotland, and Greece, respectively. Illustrations show the school building and its neighborhood.

Ira W. Allen (1827–1912) was a well-known educator. “For eighteen years he was head of the Allen Academy [in Chicago], which closed in 1892, when he retired. He was a graduate of Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y. He founded the Union Christian College in Indiana, and at one time was head of Lake Forest University.” (New York Times)
