Jenkins: “The chief emphasis of [Beecher’s] sermon is the defamation of duellists as individuals unworthy of a good Christian’s vote.” Harriet Beecher Stowe and Henry Ward Beecher were the children of eminent clergyman Lyman Beecher (1775–1865), at this time, the pastor of the Church in East-Hampton, Long Island.
