Mansfield’s text originally appeared in the American Journal of Education and the present item is a separately-issued and stand-alone reprint. The author, Edward Deering Mansfield, was graduated from West Point in 1818 and went on to write a number of biographies on military figures such as Winfield Scott and Ulysses S. Grant.
