“With the profound esteem and best wishes of her unpopular friend…”

First edition of this anthology of writings and speeches from the great New England antislavery reformer and editor of The Liberator.

Inscribed and signed by Garrison using his full name to a fellow Massachusetts abolitionist: “Eliza Lee Follen, London. With the profound esteem and best wishes of her unpopular friend, William Lloyd Garrison. Boston, (U.S.A.) Feb. 20, 1852.” All inscribed copies of this book previously handled by our firm were either unsigned or signed by “Wm. Lloyd Garrison.”

Garrison wrote to Elizabeth Pease in 1851, and noted that Eliza Lee Follen had accompanied Maria Weston Chapman and Caroline Chapman to London; the three women “exerting a constant and wholesome anti-slavery influence on your side of the Atlantic.”

Eliza Lee Cabot Follen (1787–1860) was an editor, author of A Letter to Mothers in the Free States and Anti-Slavery Hymns and Songs, contributor to The Liberty Bell and a social reformer “so early in her dedication to the antislavery movement that only the foremost pioneers preceded her … She served for many years on the executive committees of the Massachusetts and the American antislavery societies.” (NAW)

Garrison’s son, Charles Follen Garrison, was named for Eliza Lee Follen’s spouse, Charles Follen, also an abolitionist and Garrison ally.
