Three 1870-1875 Pennsylvania National Guard Documents Signed; U.S. Centennial Preparations by 1st Regiment Infantry, Gray Reserves.

Three documents pertaining to drilling, inspection, uniforms, band, and general discipline of the 1st Regiment Infantry, National Guard of Pennsylvania, known as the “Gray Reserves.”

A September 1, 1875 circular letter and a General Order of the same date, issued from the regiment’s headquarters in Philadelphia, both concern preparations for the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 to be held there. The General Order notes when each battalion of the regiment is to assemble for inspection “in Full Dress Uniform, with knapsack” and at which armory.

By order of Colonel R. Dale Benson, Adjutant Joseph B. Godwin appeals in the circular for increased recruitment, adding that “In view of the few months for preparations preceding the Centennial Anniversary, when this organization will be called upon to perform its part in the attendant ceremonies, before representatives from all parts of the world, your national as well as state pride is appealed to…”
