A pencil inscription reads: “My great uncle Gus Herkenham Captain on the Hudson R. [River] for over 50 years.” This is Augustus “Gus” Herkenham (1830/31-1905) of Albany, an émigré from Bavaria. The 1875 New York State Census describes him as a “Boat Man” and living with his wife, Mary A. Herkenham, and his six children. Augustus is buried in Menands, Albany County, New York.
