Dr. Benjamin Franklin. Engraved by J. Hopwood from an original Picture in the Possession of the late General Washington.

An 1801 stipple engraving of Benjamin Franklin claimed to have been made after a portrait owned by George Washington. “Hopwood worked for British magazines of the early 19th century both as designer and engraver. This plate is probably derived from one of the prints after Chamberlain, with alterations in the hair and costume, and with a spurious provenance intended to give it distinction and authority.” (Sellers pp384–385)
