Benjamin Franklin, L.L.D.

Intaglio print based on Suzanne’s sculpture; “Though a posthumous likeness, the portrait was acceptable to those who had known Franklin well by sight, as Suzanne himself may have done, and it is important as one of the few representations of the complete figure ... Perhaps the earliest engraving from it [this engraving] is a thoroughly Anglicized version.” (Sellers, Franklin in Portraiture, p373–374.) An unusual portrait of Benjamin Franklin as he is shown walking with his hat under his arm, his hand in his waistcoat pocket. Franklin’s image is surrounded by a rectangular box with a rolled parchment and quill brush at is top.
