“All children are born savages…”

Printed by the boys in the school’s class in printing. Swinehart was the chief parole office of the Glen Mills Schools in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, established in 1826 and originally named the House of Refuge of Pennsylvania. The Glen Mills Schools for Boys was a reformatory for juvenile delinquents. Its mission was to protect the boys from ending up in jail, to prevent them from committing crimes against society, and to prevent them from sabotaging their futures through irresponsible behavior or illegal activity.

Swinehart gives a general history of the school and remarks: “All children are born savages. They naturally are thieves and liars.” He goes on to comment on the decline morality amount the youth (My opinion: Each generation believes their youth decline further and faster than those of the previous) and speculates that the downward spiral could be due to “ball parks, moving picture shows, [and] automobiles…” (p13) Other observations are made on child labor, eugenics, the duties of a probation officer, etc.

Unrecorded in OCLC and printed by the school’s inmates in what would have been a very small press run.
