“Never was the Free North—never was the Free West so humbled at the footstool of the Slave Power…”

Proceedings and anti-slavery resolutions adopted by the 1848 Ohio Free Territory Convention of the newly formed Free Soil Party. The party met in Columbus to encourage attendance at a national Free Soil convention in Buffalo and to demand “No more Slave States and No Slave Territory.” (p6)

The convention resolved to approve Congressman David Wilmot’s “opposition to the demands of the Slave Power” (his “Wilmot Proviso”) and commended opposition to the nomination of slaveholder Zachary Taylor as Democratic candidate for president.

The tract includes two convention addresses: “Address if the Independent State Free Territory Convention, held at Columbus, June 20th and 21st, to the People of Ohio” [and:] “Address if the Independent State Free Territory Convention, held at Columbus, June 20th and 21st, to the People of the United States.”

This example includes a preliminary advertisement for James G. Birney’s rare abolitionist tract, Facts for the People: Showing that the SLAVE POWER has had the Lion’s Share in the Government of the Country.
