Grant’s Sketch of Calabar.


A mid-20th c. printing of a 19th century description of Calabar, West Africa by James Grant, Liverpool-based commercial and slave trader, written during one of the last slaving voyages out of England. Grant’s account was first published in Memoirs of the Late Captain Hugh Crow (London, 1830), on whose ship he traveled, and is here reprinted as the first of a series of “accounts, voyages, and chronicles dealing with the Efik and other groups inhabiting the Bight of Biafra.” (Preface).
