Bacon’s Essays, originally published in 1597, is his most enduringly popular work; two more editions were published in his lifetime and there were more than twenty editions in the 17th century alone. (ODNB) First separately published in America in 1807, in Boston, this “New Edition” of Essays, Moral, Economical, and Political, according to the title page, translates Bacon’s quotations from the Latin and adds his “Apothegms, Select Sentences, Christian Paradoxes, Confession of Faith, and Essay on Death.” Scarce to commerce.
