Dictionary Wars. Part of an ongoing feud between the Merriams and lexicographer Joseph Worcester, the former making accusations that Worcester had stolen their intellectual property. Numerous letters and attestations are reprinted within by such notables as Noah Webster, Jared Sparks, Francis Lieber and others.

Worcester’s “A Comprehensive Pronouncing and Explanatory Dictionary of the English Language (1830), the first of his own dictionaries, marked the beginning of a long and bitter rivalry between Worcester and Noah Webster. In reply to Webster’s charge of plagiarism, Worcester published A Cross Literary Fraud Exposed (1853).” His Dictionary of the English Language (1860) was the first illustrated dictionary. —Benet’s.
