Concerns lengthy communiques concerning accusations and affidavits by various Portuguese slavers that American-flagged vessels—whalers, barques, and so forth—were abducting their enslaved sailors or “cargo.” President Tyler owned numerous slaves and argued strenuously on behalf of the rights of slaveholders.
