An Introductory Lecture, delivered before the Medical Class of the University, November, 1837. [University of Maryland]


Lecture by University of Maryland professor Samuel George Baker (1814-1841), M.D. introducing his course on materia medica or pharmacy. In addition to his medical observations, Dr. Baker discusses the university’s 1812 perpetual charter and a conflict between the Faculty of Medicine and the university’s administration. Baker was the son of Dr. Samuel Baker (1785–1835), professor of materia medica in the College of Medicine of Maryland and the University of Maryland from 1809 to 1833 and dean of the university in 1829–1830.
