Autograph Signature of Charles E. Hughes, 11th U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice and Presidential Candidate.

Good autograph signature of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Charles E. Hughes (1862–1948). As was typical of early autograph collectors, this signature was taken from a letter. The typed portion that remains reads: “I am, my dear Senator Pepper, Sincerely Yours Charles E. Hughes”.  Senator George Wharton Pepper (March 16, 1867 – May 24, 1961) was a lawyer and law professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He served as a senator between 1922–1927. Between these years, Hughes was Secretary of State and a private citizen. Likely, this was signed when Hughes was the former as one can see a watermark of the Great Seal of the United States when holding this item up to the light. Hughes left office as Secretary of State in early 1925. We conclude this autograph was written by Hughes between 1922 to 1925.
